The fall started busily for VentureSouth in October. We made investments, added new members, enjoyed supporting our portfolio companies in their announcements, recognized four "members of the week" – and celebrated Halloween in style.
Investments: For obvious reasons, it was a quieter-than-usual month on new investments in the Carolinas. Nonetheless, VentureSouth members invested over $440K in four existing portfolio companies, including this round from Case Status, contributing to one of the biggest venture capital rounds in South Carolina this year.
Diligence: We continued working on new investments, with four companies spanning Florida to Virginia moving through our diligence gauntlet, despite the weather interruptions.
Portfolio: October was filled with big announcements from our portfolio companies. Notable news included:
- Plantd has secured a major contract with DR Horton
- Phinite announced new manufacturing plant in Sampson County
- Iconic Moments sold out its latest Norman Rockwell release
- Gradient Health acquired DataAppraisal
And we welcomed Redbud Labs and Babylon Microfarms onto the Venture in the South podcast. (Subscribe on Spotify or leave a review on Apple podcasts, whydontcha?)
Meetings & Membership:
- We held angel investor meetings in six cities (and several online), and welcomed four new members to our flock across three of our migration sites across the Southeast.
- And we recognized Jacqueline Williams, Kevin Arbotsinger, David Brenner, and Richard Ball as “members of the week” for their contributions to the VentureSouth angel investor community.
Out and about:
- The most dangerous place in South Carolina currently is between Paul and a PR outlet. Get some of Paul’s advice from the CSuite here.
- Thanks to VentureSouth member Amy Jacobs for organizing a successful event at UNC Charlotte to encourage those seeking to “Do Good While Doing Well” with Marcia Dawood. (Get the book here!)
- Lastly the VentureSouth family won Halloween, with costumes designed to impress Swiftees, ACOTARs, and Apiarists. If you follow the team’s social media posts, you’ll see all the trouble.
